Multiple Ionization under Short Wavelength Radiation: Sequential versus Direct Processes

Beginning with a review of the 2-electron problem in the new context of interaction with strong XUV
and soft X-ray radiation, I discuss the hierarchy of multiphoton processes appearing in multielectron
atoms exposed to strong short wavelength radiation in the light of related experience, accumulated
over the last three decades, in the optical and UV range, as well as recent experimental results.
